Itinerary
Your day will begin with a drive thru the New Town in Edinburgh and then onto South Queensferry with views over the Firth of Forth and the famous Forth Railway Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The first stop will be the charming village of Dunkeld, perched on the banks of the River Tay. We will visit the famous cathedral and hopefully watch people flyfishing in the River Tay. Before taking a short walk to St Ossians Hall in the Hermitage to view the falls.
Near Inverness, we will visit the historic site Culloden Moor. This is where the famous 1746 Battle of Culloden took place, ending the Jacobite Rising and bringing about the “beginning of the end for the Highlands”. This was also the last battle on British soil. You can tour the visitor centre to learn more about it. Nearby you will roam around the Bronze-age cemetery Clava Cairns. It consists of a series of tombs and standing stones dating back roughly 4,000 years, making it older than Stonehenge.
Today, we will first drive you south along the shores of Loch Ness, which is the largest loch by volume in the British Isles thanks to its great depth. There you have the option to enjoy a cruise of Loch Ness to explore its deep and mysterious waters and try to catch a glimpse of Nessie, or explore the nearby Urquhart Castle ruins on the shores of the loch.
Later we will pass south past the town of Fort William with views over Ben Nevis, Scotland and the UK‘s highest mountain, before making the worthwhile stop in Scotland’s most famous valley, Glencoe, which offers breathtaking scenes. Continuing along the Appin Coastline to Oban on the west coast. It is known as the “Gateway to the Isles” and the “Seafood Capital of Scotland”.
Today’s drive will bring you back to Edinburgh. Your first stop will be at St Conans Kirk, then a walk at the atmospheric Kilchurn Castle at Loch Awe, one of the most picturesque castles in Scotland. We will take you through the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. This is Scotland’s first national park and it is formed of four distinctive areas, all of them featuring different habitats and therefore a huge variety of wildlife.
We will then feed the Hairy Coos at Kilmahog and drive through the small town of Doune, where you may want to make a photo stop at the now famous ruins of Doune Castle. You may recognise it as it has been featured in classics such as Monty Python & the Holy Grail, but also in other films and television series such as Outlander, Game of Thrones and Outlaw King.
Our penultimate stop Stirling Castle sitting atop the city hill. It is one of Scotland’s most popular attractions and worth a visit if you have the time. In the north-east of the city, you will see the monument to William Wallace, the rebellious Scottish knight subject of the film Braveheart.
If time allows on the way to Edinburgh, we will make a short final stop at the Kelpies and visit these giant 30-metre high horse-head sculptures.
